The short version. CloakPane has no accounts and no sign-up. We don't track your browsing, and we don't have a server that can see it. What the app stores stays on your Mac, encrypted. Beyond what you choose to send us (like a support email or a purchase), the app sends only anonymous, aggregate diagnostics — app version, crashes and which features are used — which never include your browsing and aren't linked to you.
This Privacy Policy explains how CloakPane ("we", "us") handles information in connection with the CloakPane macOS application (the "App") and the website at cloakpane.com (the "Site"). It is also the privacy policy referenced by the App's App Store listing.
1. Our core principle: local-first
CloakPane is designed so that your browsing never reaches us. The App works without an account and without logging in. Your bookmarks, history, open tabs, settings and website logins are stored only on your device and are encrypted at rest.
2. Information the App does not collect
CloakPane does not collect, transmit or sell any of the following:
- The websites you visit, URLs, page content or search terms
- Your bookmarks, history, tabs or downloads
- Your website logins, cookies or form data
- Any personal profile, advertising identifier, or cross-site tracking data
This information never leaves your Mac through CloakPane.
3. Information we may process
a) Anonymous diagnostics (always on)
To fix crashes and understand how the App is used, CloakPane sends anonymous, aggregate diagnostics — such as crash reports, the App version, your macOS version, and which features are used. This is always on and helps us improve CloakPane. It is not linked to you (the only identifier is a random id created on your device and hashed before it is sent) and it never includes the websites you visit, your tabs, history, searches or any page content.
b) Purchases and licensing
If you buy CloakPane, payment is handled by our third-party payment provider. We do not receive or store your full card details. We receive limited order information (such as your email address and a license/order reference) in order to deliver and validate your license and provide receipts and support.
c) Communications with us
If you email us (for example, support@cloakpane.com), we receive your email address and the contents of your message, and keep that correspondence to respond and provide support.
4. The Site
The Site uses a privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics tool to understand aggregate traffic (such as page views and referring sites). It does not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies and does not build a profile of you. We decline non-essential cookies by default.
5. Service providers
We use a small number of reputable providers strictly to operate CloakPane — for example, email hosting, privacy-respecting website analytics, crash reporting, and payment processing. These providers process data only on our behalf and only as needed for those functions.
6. How your data is protected
Data the App stores locally is encrypted at rest using AES-GCM, with the encryption key held in your Mac's keychain. You can additionally lock the App behind Touch ID. Because we hold almost no personal data ourselves, there is very little about you for anyone to obtain from us.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Since we hold little more than support correspondence and limited purchase records, you can exercise these rights simply by contacting us. We will respond as required by applicable law.
8. Children
CloakPane is not directed to children and is not intended for use by anyone under the age required by the laws of their country to consent to processing of personal data. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
9. International users
CloakPane is operated from India. If you use it from elsewhere, be aware that any limited information you send us (such as a support email) may be processed in India and in the countries where our service providers operate.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice where appropriate.
